Trane’s published national examples span $5,093–$6,386 for up to 80% AFUE furnaces and $6,630–$8,390 for up to 96% AFUE furnaces across three equipment tiers. These manufacturer-specific, before-tax equipment-and-installation examples are a reference, not a local quote or a fair-price rule.
Use the reference correctly
The table below comes from Trane’s pricing guide and furnace FAQs, checked October 21, 2026. It separates the three equipment tiers rather than treating AFUE as the only price variable. Brand, capacity, location and the installation job can change the amount. These are not contractor bids collected by this site.
Use the published-reference comparison below only after identifying a furnace-only, before-tax amount. For a furnace-and-AC package, request separate scope and pricing first. An internet range cannot establish a local upgrade premium or a household’s payback period.
Make the scope comparable
Before deciding what a high or low number means, compare these boundaries:
| Question | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|
| Which components are replaced? | A new AC, coil or duct project is different from furnace-only work. |
| Which exact model and features? | Heating stages and blower features are separate from AFUE. |
| What venting and drainage work is included? | The existing arrangement may need a different installation plan. |
| Who handles permits, removal and startup? | Unresolved work can become a later charge or responsibility. |
| Is tax included? | Do not compare a tax-inclusive total with a before-tax reference. |
| Which allowances and exclusions remain? | A small base total can omit work another proposal includes. |
| What do parts and labor warranties cover? | Durations alone do not state exclusions or registration terms. |
Equipment selection also starts with the home’s heating load. DOE’s sizing overview explains why load assessment matters; selecting capacity from a price table does not provide it.
What to do with your number
A number below the examples is a reason to check the model and omitted scope, not evidence of a bargain. A number above them calls for an itemized explanation of the equipment and work, not an automatic rejection. A number inside the envelope still needs a scope review.
ENERGY STAR recommends written, itemized proposals. Ask another contractor to assess the same replacement boundaries, then compare the furnace quotes. Keep the assessment, total, exclusions and any change-order process together in writing.
Only have one proposal? Start with the 8-question furnace quote check. For line items and allowances, open detailed mode. Read the 80% versus 96% AFUE guide before assuming that the equipment rating describes the installation.
Common questions
Is this the average furnace replacement price in my city?
No. The examples describe one manufacturer’s national references. This project has not collected a representative set of local bids and cannot establish a city average.
Can I subtract the two ranges to calculate an efficiency upgrade premium?
No. The examples are not two matched proposals for your home. Request comparable model, capacity, features and installation scope from the contractor.
Does the reference tell me whether to replace the furnace?
No. A diagnosis and the home’s requirements come first. The reference helps prepare questions after replacement scope is understood; it does not determine whether equipment is safe or repairable.

Manufacturer-specific national examples including furnace equipment, labor and basic dealer services before tax. Accessories and extra installation work vary. These are not local quotes or an all-brand market survey. Confirm permits, vent alterations, drainage, electrical work and retained AC scope separately. Ranges may change after our review.
Where does my listed amount sit relative to these examples?
This compares a number with the outer endpoints of one brand’s three example tiers. It is not a percentile, average, fair-price verdict or savings estimate. Another brand, capacity, home or scope can have a different price. If tax or system scope is unresolved, ask for an itemized amount first.
